Question #8:
My pet lovebirds are fully flighted indoor birds and yesterday i was letting them run around the room, but their interest kept gravitating toward a small pot of lentil sprouts i was growing (just for fun to see if it would grow). I want to know what soil is safe/unsafe for them, and what plants i can grow so taht they can have more of a nature element in their playtime.
Thanks!
Why don't you want them to eat the sprouts and the seeds?
Question #9:
I'm looking for a bird that will be a one person bird, because I don't trust my brother with my pet budgie (whom he was blowing air on today), and my mom is making me let him play with him. I can supervise him but I just don't feel comfortable with letting my brother play with him. Anyway, I want a bird who will at least sit on my shoulder, but I can't buy an expensive bird. I was thinking about a Ringneck parakeet, but I don't have $100-$300+ to spend and my parents aren't going to help me. I've thought about lovebirds but are they really nippy? My budgie nips sometimes, but he never breaks skin (maybe once, but I didn't bleed). I wanted a parrotlet, but being $300 that isn't going to happen :( Does anyone have any suggestions? Will a budgie learn to stay away from certain people because of what they do to them? Thanks!
I did consider cockatiels, but I heard they have dusty feathers and I think I'm a little allergic to birds, though it isn't bad enough to keep me from them ;) but if cockatiels have notably more dust, I think I should stay away from keeping one. Thanks though!
Question #10:
I and my fiance have gone from budgies, to canaries, to cockatiels, to lovebirds (lovebirds and tiels still with us) but we'd love another bird. Something a bit harder I guess? We love parrots but any screechy ones are out of the question. I love Sun conures but he wants something bigger. he wants an umbrella cockatoo, but I'm not keen on the lifespan. We want a brightly coloured bird and one that can be tamed fairly easily or bought tame. No African Greys please - we don't like the look of them..
Question #11:
I am going to get a bird next next sunday and i need advise because I am a beginner. I was thinking of getting one of these:
Pionus Parrot,a Parakeet, Peach face lovebird,a Canarie, or a green cheeked conure. im only 10. please help and what birds are easy to care for and rarely bites? And how do u clean a bird r u supposed to? O.o also how do u clean a bird cage and will it be ok if we leave it outside?
Question #12:
I have 2 baby lovebirds, one of which may just be a day old that were tossed out of the nest by the parents just today. There is one other baby lovebird that remains in the nest with an unhatched egg. I have no problem finding information on handfeeding lovebirds that are at least 2 weeks old, but cannot find much on hatchlings! Can anyone offer me useful information? Thanks in advance!
Also, the babies keep throwing themselves on their backs and keep peeping! I'm taking this to mean they want to be fed? They keep doing it very often though, like every 20 minutes. I don't want to overfeed them seeing that most sites say to feed about every 2 hours or so!
Question #13:
I have a lovebird who's wings are not clipped. He is afraid of hands and will not let anyone pet or touch him. but he will land on you finger, your head or your shoulder when you call him, but in order to decrease his fear of hands would it helped if I clipped his wings to make him more dependent on people. but i'm afraid that he will not like people if I clip his wings and he will forget how to come when I call him. Would a harness be a better choice although I don't think I could get it on him because he is too afraid. but I feel like I don't spend as much time with him out of his cage because he has to stay in my room all day because of the low ceilings so that I can catch him to get him back in his cage where as my other birds get to go in all the rooms of the house to explore and meet the other members of my family
edit: I know how to clip wings I clip all my other bird wings myself

it knows A LOT of tricks but i was wondering if there is any "game" i can play with my lovebird. thnx
Question #18:
My son has outgrown his toddler bed & I bought the bed he's been begging for, only to hit hard times financially & not have the money to buy him a decent (not fancy but not junk) mattress. My parents are offering me an *unused* Sealy Posturepedic for free... but it's been sitting uncovered in a somewhat dusty, vacant bedroom now for over 5 years - a room where they keep caged lovebirds & budgies. I imagine most of the dust in the room is from these birds & I'm more grossed out than happy about taking the mattress (though my son desperately needs one). Am I just being stuck up, or is it right to decline? What would you do in this situation?
Question #19:
Not all of these need to be in the breed but as many as possible would be excellent
- Low/Med barker ; this one is needed as I'm pregnant and I can't have dogs waking up the baby constantly
- Not a tonne of health problems associated with the breed
- Over 15kg ; my fiance hates small dogs
- Social ; we often have friends over and also have three dogs of our own
- Known for being good with kids
- Not a high prey drive ;we have cockatiels, lovebirds, a budgie, rats, and a hamster.
- Not too high energy ; an hour to two hours a day is fine, but they could only have a quick 5 - 15 min walk in the morning as we both work
- Isn't prone to separation anxiety
- We have a medium size house and garden with 6ft fences
- Preferably an unusual breed
We already have a Collie, Terrier, and Chinese Crested.
Please, no Labradors, Poodles, 'Labradoodles' etc. - I'm not keen on these at all after our family Labradoodle nearly took my face off as a kid.
Also, we won't be rescuing. I've had very bad experiences with children and foster dogs and it's really put me off. I'm a protective person anyway and it wouldn't be fair on the dog if I was nervous around it constantly.
We're looking into getting one when my baby is 2 - 6 years old depending on how we're coping financially and emotionally, but I'd like to look into good breeders way beforehand considering the waiting lists.
Question #20:
I have two lovely masked lovebirds who where hand reared from the same clutch. They are about 5 months old and very happy and healthy. At the moment I work full time as a live in carer for my Mum so I am at home most of the day and can pop in and say an extra hello quite often. I also spend at least two hours with them in the evening.
I know that I will never have so much time to devote to introducing new birds to the flock as I do now and am wondering if getting another pair of masked hand rears is a good idea. I will always be able to spend enough tie with them to keep the happy but wonder if more bird company would be good when I start working again?
Please let me know what you think. Thank you for any advice you can give.
