Question #1:
He is a lab mix. Very smart. We just got him this week. His main negative issue is mouthing. I have repeatedly tried screeching "EEEEEEeeeeeeeee" and "Oowwwwwww" but they haven't had much effect. I've also tried redirecting him by giving him a chew toy instead of my arm. That helps a little but he just gets more rambunctious. When we can we have done the turn your back and ignore for 15 seconds. That has worked the best but it's always possible - like when you are laying down. Anyone know any other tricks and any guesses how long this will take? I keet chanting the mantra, "I am not a chew toy" but it hasn't worked yet.
Oh he was been NEUTERED.
Thank you
Question #2:
I got a green grape, I cut it up then I realized I forgot to wash it so I just put it under the sink and kinda washed them by filling up the bowl and pouring it out and i sprayed it with the built in sink hose.
Do you think they are washed good enough? Will my keet be oaky?
Question #3:
I've had my parakeet for about 3 years. We're close; he steps up on our fingers and shoulders and likes to groom us. My older sister now wants to get a new parakeet for a friend. If we did get another parakeet, would we not be able to play/bond with my first parakeet?
And if we do get another keet, should it be male so they don't mate?
Question #4:
We feed the wild birds and now have an escaped parakeet coming in to the feeders. Need some ideas on how to capture the little dickens as it won't be able to survive the winter outside here in N. Central PA, USA. He/she flies very well and is happily hanging out with the house finches.
Is there any food or treat that your 'keet absolutely loves that might help lure the bird into a cage?
Right now I have a bird cage nearby but letting all the birds get accustomed to that. They know when something changes around the feeders and it takes them a day or so to settle back down. Planning on putting food in the cage as the next step and progressing from there. He/she will let you get about 6 to 8' from it before flying off right now but netting would be next to impossible.
It is rather funny to hear a line of parakeet chatter in amongst the other birds songs and stranger still to see a yellow and bright green parakeet feeding at the feeders with the house finches.
Any suggestions? Wild birds I have a lot of general knowledge on but domesticated ones, not so much.
Question #5:
I have owned a pair of budgies for several years now and I love them! I am thinking about getting a type of conure and I was wondering how temperamental/feisty/ noisy...etc. they often get...compared to a keet.
Question #6:
So I have been taking care of my keet for about a month now and I'm not really sure what he likes and doesn't I got o his cage and sing very softly for him and he moves his beak a lot. and even when i leave the room he always chirps for me to come back (or at least i think he always makes a lot of noise as soon as i leave.) But every time I'v tried to feed him by hand or open the cage he gets very afraid. Is there a way besides further care and time that i could better earn the trust of my friend? ^_^;;;
Question #7:
Hi. I have a parakeet who is all puffed up. My guess is he is probably about three months old. I cant tell if he has bars on his head or not because his markings are really really light, but his eyes are totally black, his cere was pinker a couple weeks ago bow its bluer, and he is a little smaller than my two years old keet. All of a sudden he is puffed uo. it had been about two days. He is playing with toys, eating up a storm, flying around, preening alot and making noise. I was wondering if he is about to have his first molt although I have only seem a few little white buffs floating around and all my keets are yellow so I cant tell who's puffs they are. I had a one who was sick last year and he was puffed up but all he did was sleep and he looked like crap. He didn't play with others and in fact his mate was mean to him when he was sick. She used to push him out of the food and off the perch. The same mate bird is being nice and playing with this puffy one. If you have seen this around the time of a first molt I will be happy. I would hate to take him to the vet just for molting because last time it was very expensive because the other bird was at the vet twice and had poopie tests and special food and enzymes medicine from the vet and he only lasted a couple weeks. Thanks in advance.
Question #8:
Since AR is pretty much a red state now, one of the few states McCain did really well in. Is Beebe very popular? The AR senate seat apperars to be a GOP pickup with Boozman beating Lincoln, could the wave sweep Beebe out of office?
Question #9:
I had bought a parakeet a few months ago and just recently I bought another one. They get along i guess(the older one chirps when the new one gets too close), but i don't know what gender they are.
First off my few month old keet has a blue-ish nose with purple( so i thought it was a boy)... until i read that when you hold them the boy is calm, but when i hold my bird it squirms and screeches loudly.
Well, when I hold the other one and wrap my hand around it doesn't screech, and it only wiggles a little. It has a tan-pink nose, but that doesn't really matter because it can still change.
PLEASE help me because if they are different genders I will have to start reading about breading and get a nest box, because I will not give one away and I also will NOT separate them(well when the birds hatch I will eventually separate the dad if I have to!
Question #10:
I have a female parakeet and hse is handtame and likes being held. She is lonely and very social with other birds (she loves my cockatiel) so i thought about getting her a keet friend. (FEmale).
Someone toldme that if i did my parakeet wouldnt like me anymore and would only pay attention to its new friend. Is ot true? Would she still let me pick her up?
skydanzer400: thanks for the info! also, the tiel hates the keet ;) its only a one way relationship
Question #11:
She bites at it a lot and often, but I don't know if it is out of boredom or because she doesn't like it. I'm getting more toys soon since there aren't much in the cage. The ID band is actually really loose on her foot because she has been biting it so much, and if I got pliers I could take it off - only thing is, she's not very tame and won't let me hold her for long. Should I do anything about it? We can't afford to take her to a vet to have it removed.. :O
Her talons/claws are getting pretty long, too - by my standards anyways. She is I think two years old and I have never clipped her talons before. Will they hurt her? I don't know how to, either, and plus she isn't very tame, and we can't afford to take her to a vet, as before mentioned.
What should I do about it, if I should do anything at all?
Question #12:
I'm thinking of breeding superworms for my red eared sliders and eastern box turtle, but I'll probably end up with more than I need and I'm looking for ways I could get rid of "surplus" without just wasting them. I have a greenand yellow parakeet, which I've had for about 3 1/2 years, and I was curious as to whether she could eat them? I've heard that parakeets can eat mealworms, so I would think superworms would be ok...I'd probably have to kill the superworms first, though, cuz I've heard they can bite through the
stomach and kill small animals from the inside...don't want that to happen to my keet!
ps. Do you think I could sell some to petsmart/petco?
Question #13:
For my birthday, I am asking for a parakeet. I'm not definitely getting one, but my parents are thinking about it! (: If I do end up getting one, would just one keet be okay alone? Or should I get him/her a friend? I really don't want the little bird to be lonely but, I don't know if I can convince my parents to get me TWO keets....
Help?
Thanks tons(:
Question #14:

Question #15:
I owned 5 parakeets. I went on vacation last thursday. I was going to take my parakeets to the pet store so they could be taken care of while I was gone. While I was trying to put my keets in the car, my bird flipped out. He is an 11 year old parakeet so he isnt as fast or strong as my other keets. He went to the bottom of the cage and wouldnt get up to go on his perch. My mom opened the door to get him to go up, ( I told her not to but she did anyway) and then he was fine and flew on the grass and then up on my neighbors roof, and flew away. So it was an accident.
His wings arent clipped and hes not hand tame, so it was hard to get him.We looked everywhere, in the backyard and around but didnt see him anywhere. So we dont know where he went.
Then we had to leave to go on vacation, and we are now back.
I reported him missing to the county animal shelter. I also made a flyer today that I am going to post around to see if anyone can find him.
Hes an old keet, it has been warm out, but we have also had a few thunderstorms these past few days.
How likely is it that someone found him and/or he was able to survive?
And how likely would it be that someone would find him after 5 days?
Question #16:
I am really confused. Some say they do, some say they don't. Anyone with parakeets have experience? I want a keet and need to figure this out. Thanks!!!!!!!
Question #17:
Last year when I started snowboarding, I remember falling pretty hard on my wrist on the 1st day. It hurt but I managed to get back up and keet going, the pain eventually subsided and was bothersome for about a week but I thought I had just sprained it or something. Well, here I am a yr. later with pain in my wrist-still. It is nothing extreme, just sort of annoying. I can almost feel a "popping," when pressing in a certain area. I can feel it crack often(it cracks loud when I move it a certain way), and will get sharp pains from the outside of my wrist to the outside of my elbow. They are not extremely painful in any way, which is probably why it has been a year. I have started to experience tingling from the far side of my wrist up into my hand. Again, nothing more than annoying. However, it has me wondering- could I have fractured it without realizing it? I mean, I think I have a pretty high tolerance for pain, but could I have done something more than a sprain and now it has healed wrong? And if so, what am I supposed to do about it now? Should I have it checked by a doctor(X-ray) even if they might not be able to do anything? Would an X-ray show if the bone had been fractured, over a year ago? Would they re-break it or something?
Question #18:
I'm on day 2 of owning my first keet. I knew he would take time to adjust when I took him home since I did some research on their behavior in a new environment. A few hours ago he started making his first happy little chirps and jumping from perch to perch in his large cage. At any rate, I supplied him with 2 containers of food and 2 containers of water.. and he has yet to discover them. I did also put a millet stick on his play ladder, which I saw him happily picking at yesterday and today. It kept falling to the bottom of his cage though so I went out and bought a millet stick holder which hangs off the roof of his cage. A bit ago I saw him walking about the bottom of his cage trying to peck away at the floor of it which had some of the millet seeds spread out. I'm a little worried. Will he find his food and water when he starts to get hungry? Also, where do you experienced keet owners reccomend I place these things? I have them close to perches about mid-height of his cage and all are accessible. Should I put them on the floor of the cage? (They're covered, no droppings could get inside of them)
