Question #1:
I'm looking into getting a bird, and pionus seem like a good choice (this is my first bird). And I was wondering, does anyone have experience owning or caring for them? I was thinking of either a Maxi, blue head or bronze winged. Just wondering about their general personality. I know they are quiet, but how quiet is a pi in a 1 bird house
Any information is appreciated =)
Question #2:
So I'm thinking about getting a parrot soon, and lately I've been really drawn to the bronze winged pionus. But before I start looking for breeders, there is a few more things I need to know (which is actually a lot but I'm working on reading a parrot book right now)
1. Most places I look, Pi's are supposed to live 25-40 years, but many only live 3-10 because of malnutrition. Do they require a higher percentage of fresh food in their diet than other parrots? Are there any specific foods that are super-good for them?
2. Also, I read Pionus eat a lot. How much food is required for Maximillians, Bronze winged, Blue headed and Dusky Pionus?
3. A lot of sources say their particularly quiet. Exactly how quiet are they?
4. If you've had them before, what was your experience with them- good, bad, indifferent?
5. Are they a good bird for a beginner dedicated to animals? Someone is home most of the day and I have at least 2 hours at night to spend with them- does that sound okay?
Question #3:
I'll probably buy one from our local "bird house" as apposed to the pet store, and I want to know what to expect price-wise.
i'm looking at dusky, white capped, or bronze winged (if possible!)
Question #4:
My family got a bronze wing pionus a couple weeks ago and she is still thinner than she should be. I feed her peanuts but she doesnt eat them often enough for her to gain a little more weight.

Here is a picture of her, that line down the middle of her belly is like a small ridge that should be covered by fat.
Question #5:
I have been researching for months on parrots and have had countless switchbacks of decisions on which breed to go with. Now that I've decided 100% on the Pionus Parrot, I'm trying to find a breeder, and it's nearly impossible in Oregon. I am willing to drive to almost any part of Oregon.
I don't mind buying from out of state and having the bird shipped to me, but that is least preferable. I'd much rather find a breeder or someone looking to re-home their own Pionus, depending on the age.
I'm mostly interested in the Blue-Headed Pionus, but am also considering the Bronze-Winged and the White-Capped as well.
Thanks
Question #6:
how do i get my bronze winged pionus to let me hold him. we rescued him from a pet store and hes very hand shy. any tips would be appreciated. we estimated that hes about 3 or 4 but i would really like to pet him and hold him without him screaming or biting.
Question #7:
i have a Bronze Winged Pionus named Mo. I've had him for about 8 months. we rescued the little guy from a pet store. he was all alone in a corner so i begged my mom to get him. he was in a tiny cage so we bought him one bigger than i am. now i think that he's fully adjusted and would like to train him. he is VERY hand shy we have no idea how old he is but the vet estimated that he's around 3. I want to be able to hold him and pet him. does any one have suggestions on how to ease him to handled with hands.
i really would like to pet my bird
please help
Question #8:
I am afraid to use anything. I was wondering if anyone knew if I could use vinegar or lemon juice to mop the floors and wipe counters?
What cleaning products do you use that's not harmful to your bird or birds. I have 5 cockatiels, bronze wing pionus, and a sparrow. Also I have 3 little yappie dogs so I am in dire need to use something. Thank you.
Question #9:
We have a 4 month old female we bought Sunday. Does anyone know if you can mate them up with a Pionus of different color, such as, a Blue or other. Does it have to be another Bronze Wing? I can't find allot about the Pionus on the web and was just wondering if it was like the Cockatiels where the color doesn't matter. If you know of a good website on them please let me know the URL
Thank you
